The Rules

At ORGT, we have lots of rules! It's not that we're trying to be difficult - it's just that - well, adventure sports and water sports can be dangerous. Most of our policies are created to promote safety, good judgment and quality instruction.

We have Sea Kayaking Policies that pertain to our sport. If you use our equipment, you need to follow these rules. The policy document also outlines the paddling "progression" (IE what you need to do / learn to get "qualed" to use our equipment on your own trips, or to become an instructor or trip leader). In addition, ORGT has its own General Policies that pertain to all sports. If you're using our equipment on your own trips, you need to be familiar with these two policy documents.

ORGT also has a Trip Leader Manual. It contains procedures and advice for instructors and trip leaders. Our Operations Manual has information normally contained in an organizational charter (IE how ORGT is structured, who does what). It should make great reading material for ORGT officers.

If you are new to ORGT, and want the cliff notes version, here it is:

  • To boat with us, you must be a competent swimmer, a member of the GT community or guest, and have health / accident insurance.

  • If you meet the above criteria, you're welcome to sign up for our trips at the Wilderness Outpost, during operational hours. You must pay when you register. You'll also need to fill out a liability waiver and give us emergency medical information, including your health insurance policy number.

  • You must attend all classes and practice sessions to complete instructional schools.

  • To use our equipment on your own trips, you must be "qualed" by an ORGT trip leader. This happens when you complete our beginner and advanced schools, or when you demonstrate equivalent knowledge / experience.

  • Once you're "qualed", you can check out gear by appointment with a checkout attendant, who will make sure you get access to the gear you need, and that you bring appropriate safety gear.

  • No alcohol is to be used in conjunction with ORGT equipment.

  • No solo boating is allowed.

  • ORGT Sea Kayaking has rules regarding what bodies of water you can paddle on, based on your skill / experience level. In order to use our kayaks in in the ocean, you must be "coastal qualed". More details on this are in the Sea Kayaking Policy Document under "paddling progression".
